Canucks’ Virtanen Suspended for Two Games

Rookie Forward Delivered “Violent, Blindsided” Hit on Sharks’ Polak

NHL

NEW YORK-The 2015-16 season has not been a kind one to the Vancouver Canucks. Like the other six Canada-based NHL teams, the Canucks do not currently sit in a playoff spot with exactly two weeks to go before the postseason starts. In fact, Vancouver is tied with the Edmonton Oilers and Toronto Maple Leafs for the fewest points in the league. The Canucks also have the NHL’s worst goal differential at -49. A 4-1 loss to the San Jose Sharks last night didn’t help any and, to make matters worse, they will be without one of their key future pieces for the next two games.

Vancouver rookie forward Jake Virtanen has been suspended for two games for a late hit on Sharks defenseman Roman Polak in last night’s game.

Early in the second period, Polak was bringing the puck out of his own zone. Almost two seconds after he had passed the puck up ice, Virtanen blindsided Polak with a shoulder check that completely caught the big defenseman off guard at the San Jose blue line.

The 19-year-old winger received a major penalty for interference, as well as a game misconduct. Today, the NHL Department of Player Safety announced that he would receive a two-game suspension for the hit. Under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement and, based on his average annual salary, Virtanen will forfeit $9,614.70.

In 51 games this season, the native of New Westminster, BC has tallied seven goals and 13 points.
