Braves @ Cubs
The lowly Atlanta Braves (5-18) headed into the Friendly Confines to face the Chicago Cubs (17-5). Aaron Blair (R) making the 2nd start of his career vs the veteran Jon Lester (L).
It looked to be a pitchers day at Wrigley Field with the wind blowing in and a scoreless game through 3 innings. The first batter for the Braves in the top of the 4th, Freddie Freeman, hit a towering shot to right for a 1-0 lead. Lester stayed focused and retired the next three batters to end the inning.
The Cubs were able to answer in the bottom of the 5th as Javier Baez lead off the inning with a lead off double. Two batters later, David Ross sjngled to left and drove Baez, tying the game at 1. Lester got into trouble in the top of the 7th with 2 singles and a walk, but was able to battle through. He then struck out the next 2 and got Nick Markakis to ground out to Anthony Rizzo, ending the inning.
Heading to the bottom of the 8th and Dexter Fowler reaching on a fielders choice, Jason Heyward walked and the Cubs were looking to take the lead. Rizzo singled to center, Fowler scored and the Cubs lead 2-1. Still with only 1 out and the bases loaded, Matt Szczur hit a grand slam and the Cubs win 6-1, maintaining the best record in baseball.
Indians @ Phillies
Corey Kluber (R) looked to improve on the year as he faced off against Adam Morgan (L) and the Phillies who are fresh off a sweep of the Washington Nationals.
Cleveland started the scoring in the top of the 5th as Rajai Davis singled to center, scoring Kluber. Jason Kipnis then followed with a 2 run bomb giving the Indians a 3-0 lead. The Phillies countered in the bottom of the 5th scoring 3, highlighted by a Carlos Ruiz double to tie the game.
The game remained tied until the bottom of the 11th when Ryan Howard hit a walk off HR to right, giving the Phils a 4-3 win. With the win, the Phils improved to 13-10, while the Indians fell to 10-10.
WhiteSox @ Orioles
Carlos Rodon and the WhiteSox faced off against Mike Wright and the Orioles. Both teams looked to continue their hot starts while respectively leading their divisions.
The Sox didnt waste any time as Avisail Garcia tripled to center, plating Melky Cabrera for a 1-0 lead. The Sox kept that lead until the bottom of the 5th when Jonathan Schoop singled to center, scoring Matt Wieters and JJ Hardy for a 2-1 O’s lead. They add another run on an infield ground out by Joey Rickard, scoring Nolan Reimold.
Trailing 3-1 in the top of the 6th, Adam Eaton scores on a Jose Abreu single to right. Brett Lawrie added a solo HR in the top of the 7th tying the game at 3. Baltimore would answer- following singles by Matt Wieters and JJ Hardy, Riemold hit a 3 run shot to right. The O’s held on for a 6-3 win, improving to 14-8. With their 2nd straight loss, the Sox still hold the best record in the AL at 16-8.
