Manchester, England – Former Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has agreed to become manager of Manchester United, according to several British sports media outlets.

The Portuguese will replace Dutchman Louis van Gaal, who was sacked on Monday, two days after United won the FA Cup.

This long-running saga looks set to finally come to a close in the coming days after months and months of speculation.

An official announcement from the club is expected on Friday.

Discussions, which started on Tuesday and were delayed by negotiations over Mourinho’s image rights, finally finished on Thursday.

Earlier on Thursday, one of Mourinho’s allies from his Inter Milan days, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, praised the Portuguese in a news conference and said that the manager can lead United back to the top.

In addition, Cristiano Ronaldo also came out to praise the signing of the Manchester based club:

“He’s already signed hasn’t he? I think it’s good. If it’s something United wanted I think it’s good – I hope Manchester United get back to what they were because it’s an impressive club but in the last years they lacked an identity a bit.”

The pair worked together at Real Madrid, where they famously did not get on, in particular during the coach’s last season at the Bernabeu in 2012-13.

However, Ronaldo has backed his compatriot to be a success but said that rumours linking him with a return to the club where he made his name are wide of the mark.

Mourinho, who has been out of work since being sacked by Chelsea in December, and will now take over the Red Devils, a job he has been wanting since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013.
