Penguins Force Game 7 With 5-2 Win Over Lightning

The Pittsburgh Penguins took on the Tampa Bay Lightning in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Final at Amalie Arena on Tuesday.

Rookie goalie Matt Murray was in goal for the Penguins.

Marc-Andre Fleury started Game 5 and made 21 saves in a 4-3 overtime loss Sunday.

“Matt Murray’s our starting goaltender,” coach Mike Sullivan told NHL.com correspondent Corey Long. “And the reason, just like the reason we make all our lineup decisions, we try to put players on the ice that give us the best chance to win.”

Murray started the first four games of the series but was pulled prior to the third period in Game 4 after giving up four goals on 30 shots. Murray has a .923 save percentage in the 2016 Stanley Cup Playoffs, but an .889 save percentage during the Eastern Conference Final.

Lightning goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy made his fifth consecutive start.

With the Penguins on a 5-on-3 advantage, Phil Kessel tipped in Sidney Crosby’s pass from midair past Andre Vasilevskiy to give Pittsburgh a 1-0 lead with 1:14 left in the first period.

Kris Letang fired a wrist shot from the top of the right circle to beat Vasilevskiy. The Penguins took a 2-0 lead at 7:40 of the second period.

Sidney Crosby moved past two defenders and fired a wrist shot through Vasilevskiy’s legs to make it 3-0 Penguins with just 26 seconds left in the second.

Brian Boyle hovered a backhander towards the net that deflected off a defender and past Matt Murray to reduce the lead to 3-1 at 5:30 of the third period.

Boyle settled a bouncing puck in the right circle and fired a wrist shot past Murray for his second goal of the game and fifth goal of the playoffs. The Lightning cut the lead to 3-2 at 12:43.

Bryan Rust made an excellent play on the breakaway to beat Vasilevskiy at 17:42 to extend the Penguins’ lead to 4-2.

Nick Bonino floated the puck into an empty net to put the Penguins up 5-2 in the final minute of the third.

The Penguins defeated the Lightning 5-2 in Game 6. Matt Murray made 28 saves for Pittsburgh. Andre Vasilevskiy made 29 saves for Tampa Bay.

The best-of-seven series is tied 3-3.

The Penguins’ victory ensured a Game 7.
