Could There Be Pitchers In The Home Run Derby?

As the Home Run Derby draws closer, MLB teams are faced with a odd but interesting question. That question is whether to allow pitchers such as: Madison Bumgarner and Jake Arrieta participate in the Derby.

The MLB has seen pitchers start hitting the ball a lot better in the last couple of years. Pitchers this year already have 11 homers one of which was a 442 foot blast by Arrieta. That was the longest homer by a pitcher his year.

Bumgarner has 13 homers in his career, the most by any active pitcher. He also owns the second longest homer by a pitcher this year (424-feet).

With all this success, it begs the question whether pitchers should be allows to participate.

Bumgarner has already said that given the chance, that he would love to be in the Derby. After hearing Bumgarner’s comments, Arrieta later said that “if he’s in it, I need to be in it.”

Pitchers take batting practice most everyday so most of them are comfortable swinging the bat.

In the future, fans may see a pitchers only Home Run Derby, or may even see pitchers such as Arrieta and Bumgarner swing the bat against the games greatest sluggers.
