MLB Injury Update – April 19th
- Updated: April 19, 2017
It’s always important to make sure your best men are healthy and ready to go on a day to day basis, but what happens when they get injured? Normally calls are made and someone is brought up to fill the vacant position for the time being. Not having your best guy on the field can change the whole dynamic and feel of the team. There have been multiple elite players in the league that have gone down due to injury. Such as- Jackie Bradley Jr, Geovany Soto, Matt Harvey, Gary Sanchez, Jean Segura, and Josh Donadson.
Jackie Bradley Jr.
Placed on the 10-day disabled list, Jackie Bradley Jr. suffered a right knee sprain injury. In the ninth inning of Saturdays 4-1 loss to the Tigers Bradley flew out, as he was rounding first the ground gave out causing him to injury his knee. If everything goes as planned he could rejoin the Red Sox Friday in Baltimore. Red Sox manager John Farrell shed more light on when Bradley will return. ” Bradley will start in Center and play five innings with triple A Pawtucket, while the team is away in Charlotte he’ll play nine innings in Center on Wednesday before a workout day on Thursday to asses his progress”. He hasn’t had many plate appearances this season with only 14, batting .286, 2 runs batted in and a stolen base.
Taken out in the 6th inning against the Phillies due to a tight left hamstring injury, while running over to cover first base on a ground ball play. He hasn’t shown and lingering effects in the hamstring which should give Mets fan one less thing to worry about. Matt Harvey has had an excellent beginning to his season posting a 2.45 ERA in 18.1 IP, 15 strike outs and a 0.98 WHIP.
Suffering from a right bicep strain against the Baltimore Orioles on Saturday. Gary Sanchez in the middle of the swing started feeling a pain in his right arm. MRI later revealed Sanchez had a strained right bicep. In the previous season Sanchez made a splash on the Yankees starting in 53 games he hit 20 home runs and 42 runs batted in. He is someone the Yankees can benefit from in every game. This season he has had 20 at bats having more of a problem keeping his average up. Batting only .150 with a home run and two runs batted in, Sanchez is expected to miss at lead 4 weeks. So, there is no need to hurry him back any faster than you need to.
Geovany Soto didn’t suffer an injury in just one game, it was a culmination of inflammation in his right elbow. He was placed on the 10-day DL. Soto had a good start to the season going 4-15 and hitting three home runs. There still is no set timetable for his return until more tests are worked out. The White Sox could use Soto in their lineup seeing his is one of the power guys on the team. So, its safe to assume that the Sox will miss Soto while he is out.
Placed on the DL due to a hamstring injury, Segura one of the more effective overall players on the Mariners has been sidelined and wants nothing more than to get back out on the field. He is still expected to return from the disabled list on April 21st when the Mariners head to Oakland. Segura has had an amazing start to the season batting .313 with 32 plate appearances, one home run, three runs batted in and three stolen bases. I expect him to continue his dominance when he returns for the series against Oakland.
The most noteworthy person on this list, Josh Donaldson the Blue Jays All Star third baseman suffered a calf injury putting him on the 10-day DL. He will get the chance to workout the calf over the next ten days hoping to return soon. Another player off to an incredible start, Donaldson is batting .310 in 29 PA hitting two HR’s, four RBI’s with a 1.015 OPS.
