Linebacker Sam Acho Re-Signs
The Chicago Bears announced on April 15th that they have re-signed linebacker Sam Acho to a one-year contract. This will be his third season with the organization.
Acho, 28, attended St. Marks School in his hometown of Dallas, Texas. A star of the Lions football team, he recorded 22 tackles in his junior and senior years combined. In addition, he was co-captain both years. He was also the state private school champion in shot put and discus.
After high school, he attended the University of Texas, where he played football for the Longhorns from 2007 until 2010. The Associated Press named Acho as honorable mention All-Big 12 as a junior as a result of his 55 tackles and eight sacks in 14 games, all of which he started. He was voted MVP, won the William V. Campbell Trophy, the Wuerffel Trophy, and was a finalist for the Lott Trophy following his senior season. He was named one of the 20 smartest athletes in sports by the Sporting News, a list which included two other college players and 17 professionals from the four major American sports.
The Arizona Cardinals selected Sam Acho with 103rd pick overall in the 2011 NFL Draft. His seven sacks in 2011 are the second most ever by a Cardinals rookie. Simeon Rice had 12.5 as a rookie Cardinal. Breaking his leg during Week 3 of the 2013 season resulted in him being placed on injured reserve and missing the remainder of the season. He accumulated 124 tackles, 13 sacks, three interceptions, one fumble recovery, seven forced fumbles, and eight pass deflections in his 51 games as a Cardinal.
Sam Acho signed a one-year contract with the Chicago Bears on April 1, 2015. A preseason bout of mononucleosis kept him sidelined for three-weeks. In his first season as a Bear, Acho recorded 60 tackles, three tackles-for-losses, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery in fifteen games with seven starts. On March 28, 2016 he signed on for an additional year.
During his two seasons in Chicago, he has racked up 66 tackles, one sack, one fumble recovery, two forced fumbles, and two pass deflections in 31 games.
On a Personal Note
Sam’s younger brother, Emmanuel, also played football for the University of Texas Longhorns. In 2011, he was a consensus All-Big 12 linebacker and is currently a free agent in the NFL.
The Acho brothers made a trip to Nigeria in 2016 to participate in Living Hope Christian Ministries’ medical mission, Operation Hope.
