Montreal Canadiens vs New York Rangers Playoff Matchup
- Updated: April 12, 2017
A first round playoff matchup is finally here. With that, the Montreal Canadiens and New York Rangers are set to play each other. The first thing that comes to mind in this match up is the heavyweight fight that’ll be the goaltending matchup. The absolute best two goalies in the league will be defending the net. Why should you believe these teams could advance? Read below to see what makes these teams so prominent.
New York Rangers
The New York Rangers have been a solid team for years now. It is in no small part thanks to their starting goalie Henrik Lundqvist. Lundqvist has been in the league since 2005 and has been an elite talent ever since. You combine that with star power they have in front of him and it makes for a lethal combination.
With the likes of Rick Nash, Ryan McDonagh, Dan Girardi and Derek Stepan, they have a solid lineup to start the playoffs. Unfortunately, I do not think they have a whole lot of depth. With this being said, it will take the stars to shine in order to advance in the playoffs.
The Montreal Canadiens are a borderline team. They have the makings to be great, but, they also could crumble with one injury. The one injury that could ultimately destroy them would be if their starting netminder were to get hurt.
Carey Price has been considered the best goalie in the NHL the last several seasons and there is no reason to believe he won’t be just that. He has simply carried his team on his back time and time again over the last few seasons. There is reason for optimism though.
They have one of the best defenseman in the league by the name of Shea Weber. They also have a lot of younger talent that is just waiting to have a breakout playoff performance.
My Prediction: This prediction could go either way when its all said and done. For now, I’ll take the Rangers in 6 for the opening playoff matchup. In the end, I do not feel that Carey Price will be able to carry this team on his back like he has for so long. At some point, Rick Nash will play like he did many years ago when he was widely considered one of the best players in the league.
