Cardinals Land Marcell Ozuna

The Cardinals took a big step forward Wednesday, by acquiring All-Star, Gold Glove, Silver Slugger outfielder Marcell Ozuna from the Miami Marlins.  The St. Louis front office had been very candid about their search for an impact bat, and Ozuna is definitely that.  There is still a need for a true super star, but bringing in Ozuna will definitely add a new dynamic to the Cards 2018 lineup.  The deal will send Sandy Alcantara and three other unnamed prospects to Miami.  It is extremely likely that at least one of the three other prospects will also be a pitcher.

Marcell Ozuna

Marcell Ozuna had a career year in 2017, and put up MVP like numbers.  He slashed .312/.376/.548, with impressive power numbers.  He hit 37 home runs, 30 doubles, drove in 124 runs, and had an OPS+ of 145, making him the type of player the Cardinals desperately missed last year.

Though Ozuna had a great 2017 season, his previous years lead to some caution when labeling him “THE bat,” that the Redbirds need.  In fact, his 162 game averages fall right in line with what the Cardinals already have plenty of, at 24 home runs, 90 RBI, a .277 average, and a 114 OPS+.

More to Come

There is belief that the Cardinals front office is not satisfied with only the addition of Ozuna, and that they may still be trying to acquire another big bat.  Should there be a second addition, it would likely be for the superstar player that is missing from the lineup.  Per Bob Nightengale,

Should this be the case, the Cards still have plenty of outfield prospects to deal, as well as some pitching left, even after the Ozuna trade.  There is also still a need for pitching, both starting and relief.  So, the remaining prospects could be used to acquire arms, unless they decide to go the free agent route.  Reports say they are front runners to return Juan Nicasio, though the Mariners are making a push as well.

The Marcell Ozuna addition is a good start, and may be the first of many dominos to fall for the Cardinals in the next couple of days.
