NASCAR

This weekend, we head back to Richmond Raceway for the final race before the NASCAR playoffs. With this race, several driver’s championship hopes that will come to an end. One person with that championship in mind is Joey Logano. As we head to Richmond, he needs a win to have a chance to claim it.

Not So Fast Joey Logano

While Joey Logano needs a win to race for the championship, he’s not winless this season. In the NASCAR Playoffs a win means you are in, but it’s a different story for the 22 team. Following his win in the spring Richmond race, Logano’s car failed tech inspection with a problem in the rear truck arm. The penalty fined crew chief Todd Gordon $50,000 and suspended him for two race weekends. The penalty also removed the 5 playoff points earned and made the win encumbered. According to NASCAR, an encumbered win also removes the automatic playoff spot.

Logano’s Summer Slump

After the penalty given to the 22 team in the spring, it seems their cars just haven’t been as fast. Logano has only posted 3 top ten’s in 16 starts since Richmond. He has dug his playoff hole deeper and deeper. The team’s performance is not what most expected from a team that finished second in the points standings just a year ago.

There is Still Hope

Even though the chances of Logano making the post season aren’t where the team wants them to be, there is still hope. After 23 starts, Logano’s average finishing position at the 0.75 mile Virginia short track is 12.9. He’s also managed to pick up 2 wins, 4 top five’s, and 12 top 10’s keeping the 22 guys optimistic for the race weekend. Everyone is anticipating Saturday night’s race at Richmond. Only then will we know if the 22 is one of the 16 that will fight for a championship!
