What is The BIG3?

I’m sure you remember the feeling of waking up on a Saturday morning, itching to play a full court pick-up game only to play 3 on 3 half court.(BIG3)

Where’s The Summer Programming?

With the NBA season ending in June and the lack of national air time the WNBA receives, the summer can be very boring. (No, I didn’t forget the NBA summer league) On January 11th,2017 rap legend, actor and producer Ice Cube founded BIG3 basketball with entertainment executive Jeff Kwatinetz.

The two created this league to give fans a chance to see former NBA stars play basketball and compete at a high level. This is a great concept for former players because they don’t have to play 82 games, commit to a long term deal, or play full court. The concept of a professional 3 on 3 league may be frowned upon.

Today Was A Good Day!

However, Cube and Kwatinetz have struck gold ladies and gentlemen. The two founders have television deals with FS1 and Fox. The BIG3 brand has done an exceptional job of promoting their brand through their website and social media accounts.

The Rules!

Now there is an interesting twist to the BIG3 in regard to the rules. There are eight teams, which contain 5 players and one coach. The game is played on a half court in local NBA arenas. (If the team travels to your city).

Any points scored inside of the arc are worth two points and you have your solid 3 pointer behind the arc. However, the founders decided to add multiple four point markers. (Yes, they have added Steph Curry Range)

The Big3 Stars

The game goes to 50 and you have to take it back on missed shots that don’t hit the rim. Now I know you guys are asking who is in the league. The league has recruited former stars such as Allen Iverson, Rashard Lewis, Kenyon Martin, Jemaine O’Neal, Mike Bibby, Jason Williams, Kwame Brown, Chauncey Billups, Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf, Larry Hughes and Kendall Gill. (There’s more)

The BIG3 persuaded Gary Payton, George Gervin, Julius Erving, Rick Mahorn, Rick Barry, Clyde Drexler, Charles Oakley, and Allen Iverson to coach.

Currently, the league has eight teams and it would be safe to assume that the league will expand.

The playoffs are set to begin August 20th. On a recent interview on ESPN’s the Jump, Cube expressed that he would like to land bigger names such as Kobe Bryant, Paul Pierce, and Kevin Garnett.

Basketball fans, you have now witnessed the revolution to a new basketball movement. The BIG3 provides an opportunity for former NBA stars and fans to relive the past in a new context.

#BIG3 please come to Washington D.C next year it’s only right!
