Rookie Cornerback Sidney Jones Practices, Great News For Eagles

The Eagles took cornerback Sidney Jones in the second round of the 2017 NFL draft. Sidney Jones was considered the second-best cornerback prospect, but he ruptured his Achilles and that caused his draft stock to go down.

The Eagles took Jones with the idea in mind that they will most likely not see him on the field in 2017. However, in light of Carson Wentz going down the Eagles announced that Jones practices with the team for the first time this week. In light of this news, the real question is, why now?

Why was the news broken when it was?

The Eagles made this move for a couple of different reasons. The most obvious is to provide good news to Eagles fans. The Eagles released this info during the same press conference as the season-ending Carson Wentz’s ACL injury.

Sidney Jones is a great prospect with a bright future, fans will have something to look forward too. A second underlying reason is that the Eagles are bringing Jones back to bolster the defense. Nobody expected to see Jones on the field this season, making his rookie year a redshirt season so to speak.

With Carson Wentz going down, the Eagles will need to get better as a team, specifically the defense. Sidney Jones will be just that, a spark to the defense at seasons end. Jones will need time to get back to game speed so we will not see him for a few week.

My prediction is Jones gets his first NFL action week 17 against the Cowboys in a game where the Eagles have already clinched a first-round bye in the playoffs. If Jones does play week 17, and the Eagles have a first-round bye, Jones will have five weeks of practice.

That is plenty of time for Jones to build on-field chemistry with this group as well as time for Jim Schwartz to get him into the scheme.

It is great to see another Eagles’ prospect on the field, and he is excited to be there. I can’t wait to see what Sidney Jones adds to an already very good Eagles defense.
