Is Week 14 a Must-Win for The Philadelphia Eagles?

PHILADELPHIA – After suffering their first loss since late September, is week 14 a must-win for the Philadelphia Eagles? Many fans will argue that every week is a “must-win” week. Others will boast that even with the consecutive loss the Eagles would still boast a 10-3 record. Either way, we are going to break down the possibilities that can come from an Eagles loss and Eagles win.

Scenarios

What if the Eagles lose to the Rams?

First, what does the matchup between the Rams actually mean? If the Eagles lose to Rams both teams will hold a 10-3 record. Luckily, this does not change anything for Eagles as they would win the tiebreaker over Los Angeles based on best win percentage in conference games. With that being said, let’s break down what else can happen around the league to change the seeding.

Eagles Loss & Saints Win & Vikings Loss:

The Saints would rally to the #1 overall seed in the NFC and Eagles would remain in the second position. The Panthers would fall from first to third as the Saints win the tie-breaker over Philadelphia and Minnesota based on strength of victory. The Saints would also win tie-breaker over Los Angeles based on best win percentage in conference games. Philadelphia wins tie break over Minnesota based on best win percentage in common games and wins tie break over Los Angeles based on best win percentage in conference games.

Eagles Loss & Saints Win & Vikings Tie:

The Saints would take over the #2 seed with the tie-breaker for the strength of victory, dropping the Eagles to the #3 seed. Vikings remain #1 Seed.

Eagles Loss & Saints Win & Vikings Win:

This would be the worst possible outcome for Philadelphia fans. A Vikings win would only strengthen their lead with an 11-2 record. While the Saints win would push them into #2 seed because of the tie-breakers listed above.

Eagles Loss & Saints Loss or Tie & Vikings Loss:

This scenario is a sneaky win for the Eagles. So, If all three teams lose this week, the Eagles would take over the #1 seed in the NFC followed by the Vikings (#2) and the Rams (#3). Philadelphia would hold the tie-breaker for common opponents over the Vikings as well as win percentage in conference games over the Rams. The Vikings would take the #2 seed over the Rams, who would now be the #3 seed, because of their head to head schedule.

Eagles loss & Saints Loss & Vikings Tie:

Nothing would change in the slightest. All teams would remain exactly where they are in the playoff picture.

Eagles Loss & Saints Loss & Viking Win:

Again, nothing would change in the slightest. All teams would remain exactly where they are in the playoff picture.

What if the Eagles Win against the Rams?

Okay, now that we got that thought of a loss out of our minds. What can the Eagles do in week 13 to take over the #1 seed in the NFC again? Well, this part is actually pretty simple. The only way the Eagles are to change anything is with a Vikings loss or tie. Furthermore, If the Vikings lose to Panthers they will fall to a record of 10-3, giving the Eagles the better record at 11-2. A win would simply hold the Eagles position as the #2 seed with hopes to solidify their position with losses from teams below them.

On a side note, the Eagles could also take over the #1 seed if they get a TIE against the Rams and Viking lose.

So when it comes down to it, is week 14 a must-win for the Philadelphia Eagles? I would have to say yes. While there are several possibilities for the Eagles to escape week 14 without a win and with taking a hit, both the Vikings and Saints are excellent teams that can not be counted on for losses.
