Ovechkin Scored His 40th Goal, Caps Forward Short 2 Goals of a 600 Goal NHL Career

Alex Ovechkin scored his 40th goal this past weekend during a game against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Despite doing so, the Caps captain didn’t find the achievement good enough.

“Forty is nice, but 50 is better,” said Ovechkin, during an interview with Jamie Hersch after the goal.

Heading into the 5-2 Capitals win against the Toronto Maple Leafs. in the 2018 Coors Light NHL Stadium Series at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium, Ovechkin’s chase for 600 career goals was the biggest story. The captain already has 20 career hat tricks, which includes three from this season. However, despite this, Ovechkin knew going into the game that it would be difficult to get the three goals he needs in order to reach said milestone.

After the games, it turns out that Ovechkin’s prediction of not reaching the 600 goal milestone came true. However, he managed to reach another significant milestone when Ovechkin scored his 40 goal for the 9th time in his 13 seasons in the NHL.  As a result, the 32-year-old is now the sixth player in NHL history to score 40 or more goals in at least nine seasons. Reaching this milestone puts the captain with players such as Wayne Gretzky (12), Marcel Dionne (10), Mario Lemieux (10), Mike Bossy (9) and Mike Gartner (9).

Ovechkin Continues the Chase for 600 Career Goals

Alex Ovechkin will continue reaching for the 600 career goals milestone on Tuesday. The Capitals will be playing against the Anaheim Ducks. Reaching the milestone will signify more than just 600 goals for the player. Doing so will make Ovechkin the 4th player in NHL history to score 600 goals in less than 1,000 games. He will be joining  Gretzky (718), Mario Lemieux (719) and Brett Hull (900). The Washington Capital has lead the NHL in goals 6 times. If Ovechkin keeps playing at his current rate, it appears he will do it again.
