Manchester City signed Aymeric Laporte from La Liga side Athletic Bilbao

Manchester, England – Manchester City signs Aymeric Laporte from Basque Country club Athletic Bilbao on a club-record transfer deal. The transfer deal is said to be worth 65M ($81M). The club had previously paid 63M ($77.7M) for Belgian Kevin De Bruyne from Wolsburg in 2015. Also, City will pay a further 5M for development rights as Laporte is a youth product of Athletic.

The Premier League leaders have always remained interested in the services of the France U21 international. City boss Pep Guardiola requested him back in October 2016 but Laporte turned down the move to Etihad. Instead, Laporte signed a deal with with Bilbaine club which ran until June 2020.

Laporte has been regarded as one of the finest young stoppers in La Liga. However, he is far from a finished product. The 23-year-old center-back has capped 200 appearances for Athletic. Thus the success with the Basque club, he has yet to cap a match with France.  With City still alive in four competitions, Laporte will be a great addition to City’s lineup.

City will play the final against Arsenal for the EFL Cup. They have a match against Wigan Athletic for the Fifth round of the FA Cup. In Champions they will match against Basel in February and in early March. City is currently at the top of the Premier League and will likely have more action during Cup games. Pep’s fixed twosome, however, is set with John Stone and Nicolas Otamendi. In any case, Laporte playing domestic matches will benefit while they keep competition in Champions.
