Breaking: Rafa Benitez Has Been Fired By Real Madrid

La Liga

Madrid, Spain – Manager Rafa Benitez has been sacked by Real Madrid. The called has been made by club president Florentino Perez. He is expected to make an official announcement this afternoon where he will present Zinedine Zidane, currently coaching Real Madrid Castilla in Spanish third division, as the successor of Benitez.

Multiple Spanish media outlets have reported that members of the club hierarchy were due to hold an emergency meeting to determine whether to sack Benitez Monday morning.

Former Valencia, Liverpool and Napoli boss Benitez has endured a difficult return to the Bernabeu, where he began his playing career with the reserve teams and later held several coaching roles.

He was named Carlo Ancelotti’s replacement in June but there was speculation from the outset that several senior players did not welcome the appointment.

Madrid are currently third in La Liga, four points behind neighbours Atletico, after Sunday’s 2-2 draw at Valencia.

Zidane has been with the first team under Ancelotti as second coach but has never manager in first division. This will be his first opportunity ahead of a club.
