Coyotes Trade All-Star Scott to Canadiens

Enforcer had been voted Pacific Division Captain

NHL

GLENDALE, AZ-In two weeks, the NHL will debut a brand new All-Star game format. The format will consist of four teams (one representing each of the league’s divisions) in a 3-on-3 tournament comprised of three 20-minute games played by divisional all-star teams competing for a winner-take-all $1 million prize. The captains of each team were announced two weeks ago. Today, one of those captains was traded out of his conference.

The Arizona Coyotes traded forward, and Pacific Division captain, John Scott to the Montreal Canadiens in a three-team deal on Friday.

Scott was selected by the fans to be captain of the team representing the Pacific Division in the All-Star Game. The election was a bit surprising, to say the least, as Scott has only played in 11 games this season, tallying just a single assist.

The 6’8” 33-year-old has never been known to be an offensive threat by any stretch of the imagination, but was still selected to be one of the four captains for the All-Star Game. In regards to how his trade affects the game, the league, in a statement issued Friday, said, “The League is evaluating how this trade impacts the Pacific Division roster for the 2016 All-Star Game.”

The other team involved in the deal with Arizona and Montreal was the Nashville Predators. The Predators traded defenseman Victor Bartley to the Coyotes for defenseman Stefan Elliott. The Coyotes then packaged Bartley and Scott to acquire defenseman Jarred Tinordi and forward Stefan Fournier from the Canadiens.

Of the other four players involved in the trade, Tinordi is the most highly-touted of the group. The 23-year-old blueliner, a first-round pick of Montreal’s back in 2010, has accumulated six assists in 46 career NHL games.

Tinordi wasn’t able to find a lot of playing time on the Montreal back end, but should fare better with the Coyotes.
