Dee Gordon busted for PEDs?

MLB

Just so you know, you did read the title correctly.  Usually when someone thinks of a professional baseball player getting busted for steroids or other performance-enhancing drugs, they would think of a home run hitter such as Barry Bonds or Mark McGwire.  Dee Gordon’s game is the exact opposite of a power hitter.  Gordon uses his speed and contact abilities to get on base and to score runs for his team batting 1st in the order.  His career high for home runs in a season is 4, which was last year.  The 28-year old 2nd basemen got handed an 80-game suspension by the MLB, which means he will return this season.  The Miami Marlins were not expected to be in the mix for the playoff race in the NL East, but Dee Gordon leaving their lineup for a few months certainly won’t help things.  Gordon is not performing up to standards this season so far, as he is only batting .266 with 5 RBI.

The most interesting part of this whole thing is that Dee Gordon denies ever “knowingly” taking a banned substance.  He was found with Testosterone and Clostebol in his system, which are both banned substances.  He actually tested positive in Spring Training, but it has not been made public until now because he has dropped his appeal.  Dee Gordon delivered this statement yesterday to Tim Reynolds of the Asscociated Press:

“Though I did not do so knowingly, I have been informed that test results showed I ingested something that contained prohibited substances.  The hardest part about this is feeling that I have let down my teammates, the organization, and the fans. I have been careful to avoid products that could contain something banned by MLB and the 20-plus tests that I have taken and passed throughout my career prove this.  I made a mistake and I accept the consequences.”

Chris Colabello, Dee Gordon and Jenrry Mejía highlight the list of players who have received suspensions/bans for PEDs in 2016.
