Denny Hamlin Wins Sprint Unlimited At Daytona

NASCAR

Denny Hamlin took home the win at the Sprint Unlimited At Daytona in what looked like a Saturday night short track race at a super-speedway. This was not only Hamlin’s first race since undergoing ACL surgery in the offseason, but it was also his first race with new crew chief Mike Wheeler.

A six-car wreck set up the first use of NASCAR’s new “overtime” rules in the Sprint Unlimited and from there Hamlin secured the win as most of the remaining cars in the 25-car field wrecked in Turns 1 and 2 with one to go.

The wreck that created the overtime scenario came with three laps left in the scheduled 75-lap event. The crash involved several contenders like Brad Keselowski, Kyle Busch, Casey Mears, Edwards, Aric Almirola and Jamie McMurray on the backstretch.

“I’m so happy for Mike Wheeler to start one-for-one with a win here at Daytona,” Hamlin told Fox. “This win, first of all couldn’t be possible without my teammates. Matt (Kenseth) sacrificed so much pushing me at the right time.”

There were seven cautions for 25 laps and Hamlin was part of the first one when he made contact with Ricky Stenhouse Jr. on Lap 14 while the two were laying back in the field.
