All eyes were on Wrigley Field Thursday night. Fans wondered, could the Cubs fight through the Dodgers series lead, or will the Dodgers win their first National League pennant since 1988. The Dodgers held a 3-1 lead after dropping the previous night’s game but had their best pitcher on the mound in Clayton Kershaw. The Cubs hopes were high as well because they were not only the reigning champs but Jose Quintana was on the mound. The game’s hype would not hold up as Quintana gave up runs early while Kershaw dominanted on the mound and enjoyed his team’s lead. Enrique Hernandez, Justin Turner, and Kershaw lead the way to an 11-1 win, in Game 5.  With the Game five victory, the Dodgers win National League Pennant title honors, and return to the World Series for the first time since 1988.

The two teams tossed two solid pitchers that they thought would put their team in place to win. For the Cubs, Quintana did not have much success with the aggressive Dodgers lineup. Same could be said for the Cubs Bullpen. They combined to give up 11 runs on 16 hits and two walks. The Dodgers, on the other hand, were nearly untouchable on the mound. Clayton Kershaw, who does not have the best postseason track record, dominated from his first pitch to his last.

Dodgers Offensive Explosion

Quintana gave up a walk to Chris Taylor then allowed a RBI to start the game. Cody Bellinger hit the double that drove in Taylor and gave the Dodgers the 1-0 lead in the first. Enrique Hernandez began his magical night with a solo home run on the first pitch to leadoff the second, and the Dodgers lead 2-0.

Quintana began the third inning but did not make a single out. A Chris Taylor double, was followed by a Justin Turner RBI single to left. Quintana allowed singles to Bellinger and Puig before being pulled. Rondon then  served up a grand slam to Enrique Hernandez. Quintana was charged with six runs across two innings.

The Dodgers added another two runs in the fourth inning, on a Logan Forsythe double off Lackey, widening the lead to nine runs. Kershaw was still tossing a no-hitter through 4 1/3 innings, until he served up Kris Bryant’s first (and only) home run of the postseason. The Cubs were still down though, as the Dodgers lead 9-1.

Kershaw exited after six innings, allowing 1 run on 3 hits and a walk with 5 strikeouts. The Dodgers bullpen continued to shut down the Cubs lineup for the rest of the game. After Lackey’s exit, Brian Duensing tossed two innings of scoreless baseball with a walk and a strikeout.

Final Inning

Hernandez and the Dodgers were not done hitting. Puig hit a one-out single to center field to get things going in the ninth. After Forsythe flew out, Hernandez launched a two-out two-run home run, his third of the night, to expand the the lead 11-1. He became the first Dodger ever with three home runs in a single postseason game.

Kenley Jansen entered in the ninth to close the series out.  He got the heart of the order (Bryant, Rizzo, and Contreras) out, on just eight pitches

What’s Next?

The story of the 2017 Cubs did not end the way the 2016 season did, but rightfully so. They fought their way from 5.5 games back and a below .500 record, to end up being the best second half team in baseball. The Cubs finished the year at 92-70 in the regular season and took the NLDS 3-2, but fell short to the Dodgers, 4-1.

The Dodgers were the better team all season long as they dominated the with a 104-58 record. That regular season success has since continued into the playoffs, as they swept the Arizona Diamondbacks and won this Cubs series. Kershaw spoke on heading into the World Series after the game, “up there with getting married and having kids, it’s right up there with one of the best days of my life.”

The Los Angeles Dodgers await the winner between the Houston Astros and New York Yankees. The first Game of the World Series is scheduled for Tuesday, October 24 at Dodger Stadium.
