Jeremy Mathieu Out With Injury 4 to 8 Weeks

La Liga

Barcelona, Spain – Barcelona defender Jeremy Mathieu underwent surgery on his torn meniscus in his right knee and will be sidelined between four to eight weeks, the club confirmed in a statement.

Mathieu suffered the injury representing France in a 4-2 win in a friendly match against Russia in preparation of Euro 2016.

The French defender was being an important piece for Luis Enrique this season, appearing in 31 games — 19 in the league, 6 in the Copa del Rey, 3 in Champions League, 1 in the Spanish Super Cup, 1 in the UEFA Super Cup and 1 in the FIFA Club World Cup — and is among the few players who have played in all competitions this season, with a balance of 2,371 minutes, during which he has two assists.

Mathieu’s versatility on the pitch will be missed against Real Madrid with Jordi Alba also being sidelined due to an injury suffered playing for Spain against Romania.

It had been suggested that Mathieu could be back in time for the Copa del Rey Final against Sevilla on May 22 but the timeline given by Barca makes that unlikely.

However, Mathieu posted on Twitter that will be back in four weeks, against what the club had initially suggested.

In any case, Mathieu could be fit to play a part in France’s Euro 2016 campaign, which is set to begin on June 10.
