Neymar will stand trial on corruption charges

Madrid, Spain – Neymar lost an appeal in Madrid court and will stand trial on corruption charges. The charges he faces relate to his transfer from Brazilian club, Santos, to Barcelona. Both clubs will also have to defend themselves in court, along with a company run by Neymar’s father.

Barcelona originally published the transfer figure as 57.1 million euros ($60.6 million), with 40 million euros of that given to the player’s family.

DIS, the Brazilian investment group, brought the complaint to court. DIS, entitled to 40% of the transfer to the Catalans, only received a significantly smaller amount.

Prosecutors are seeking a two-year prison sentence and a 10 million euros fine for Neymar.

Neymar’s arrival from Brazil’s Santos has been a huge success for the Spanish champions on the pitch but a judicial nightmare off it.

In July, another Barcelona superstar, Lionel Messi, was sentenced to 21 months in prison for tax fraud, along with his father. They will serve a probation rather than jail time and have denied any wrongdoing.

In addition to this, Barcelona paid 5.5 million euros to the Spanish tax authorities after admitting error in ‘fiscal planning’. Also, the prosecutors are looking to fine Barcelona with 9 million euros while Santos would have to pay 7 million euros.
