Defenseman to miss Game 4 for Late Hit on Capitals’ Johansson

NHL

PITTSBURGH-When the second round match ups were finalized, the Pittsburgh Penguins versus the Washington Capitals was probably the one most people looked forward to. What many probably didn’t expect was that it would get nasty. Today, we found out that there will be another suspension given to someone in this series.

Penguins defenseman Kris Letang has been suspended for one game for a late hit on Capitals forward Marcus Johansson during Game 3 of the teams’ second round series.

With 4:19 left in the first period, Johansson skated the puck through the middle of the ice into the Pittsburgh zone. After passing it off the left wing, Letang came in and checked the Swedish forward, with the chin being the principal point of contact.

Johansson stayed down on the ice for a little bit, before getting off on his own power. He did play the rest of the game. Letang was assessed a two minute penalty for interference on the play.

The 29-year-old’s suspension means he will miss Game 4 Wednesday night as Pittsburgh looks to go up 3-1 in the series. Letang is the second blueliner to be suspended in this series.

Former Penguins d-man, and current Washington defender, Brooks Orpik was suspended three games for a late hit on Pittsburgh defenseman Olli Maatta in Game 2.

Letang’s absence will hurt a Penguins’ back end that is already a bit thin. The Montreal native is team’s ice time leader and has a goal and seven points in eight games this postseason.
