Philadelphia Eagles Rumored To Trade Up, But Not To No. 1 Overall Pick or Wentz, Instead Jalen Ramsey

Cleveland Browns

Cleveland, OH – The Cleveland Browns are trading the No. 2 overall pick in the 2016 NFL draft to the Philadelphia Eagles for five selections over the next two years.

Reports from Tuesday morning indicated that the Browns were actively shopping the pick and that the Eagles were the likely trade partner. Back on March 25, TSJ101 reported that the Eagles were interested in the Browns’ pick, however, not for a quarterback, but instead for Florida State CB Jalen Ramsey. On Tuesday, Executive VP of Football Operations, Howie Roseman, confirmed that the Eagles will indeed take a quarterback with the No. 2 overall pick.

The Browns get: 2016 No. 8 overall pick, the 2016 3rd round pick (No. 77 overall), the 2016 4th round pick (No. 100 overall), the 2017 first-round pick and 2018 second-round pick.

The Eagles get: The Browns’ No. 2 overall pick and their 2017 fourth-round pick.

With 12 picks the Browns will now focus on putting bodies to protect their newly signed QB, Robert Griffin III. This will also allow them to fill those defensive areas that they were lacking last season.

However, several reports indicate that the Browns will still take on a quarterback in this draft but it will be a second-tier quarterback like Memphis’ Paxton Lynch, Michigan State’s Connor Cook or Penn State’s Christian Hackenberg.

Philadelphia Eagles

Philadelphia, PA – The Philadelphia Eagles are being said to be the top contender to trade up for the Cleveland Browns’ No. 2 overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft. With the signing of Robert Griffin III to the Browns, the need at quarterback becomes secondary (at least Hue Jackson believes so). Given the Brown’s new front office executive belief in “Moneyball” economic principles, it is feasible to believe that Cleveland would actually trade out their No. 2 for more draft picks and the Eagles would take quarterback Carson Wentz.

Quarterbacks are the primary target in football. And yes, the Eagles don’t necessary have a franchise quarterback and haven’t had one since Donovan McNabb. But, do they need to pick Wentz as their first round overall pick? The answer is NO. Our sources are indicating that the Eagles are interested in moving up to take Florida State DB Jalen Ramsey and not Wentz.

The move for Ramsey seems to be an obvious choice for Philadelphia, after all they were dead last in almost every defensive stat last season. Quite honestly this side of the ball has not been very good for the last couple of years:

  • 30th in Total Defense, allowing 401.6 yards per game
  • 32nd in Rushing, allowing 134.6 yards per game
  • 28th in Passing, allowing 271.1 yards per game

While Sam Bradford and Chase Daniel may not be fan favorites at QB, the organization is leaning towards addressing the bigger issue with the team, and that is the defensive side of things. The Eagles’ new defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz has a chance to rejuvenate this defense with some young and talented blood. Head Coach Doug Pederson had high remarks about his new coordinator, “He’s a guy that you can kind of turn the keys over to and say, ‘This is your deal.’ ”

Additionally, Ramsey is being regarded by the Tennessee Titans who have the No. 1 overall pick, but would much rather take care of that offensive line by adding Laremy Tunsil and give their first round pick from 2015 (Marcus Mariota) the protection that he needs. The Dallas Cowboys and Jacksonville Jaguars are also said to be interested in the prospect DB.

Ramsey’s value is definitely high, played cornerback and safety in college, and could be an instant impact defensive player for the Eagles. If franchise player is what the Eagles are looking for, Ramsey can be that player.
