Philadelphia to host 2018 Royal Rumble

The Royal Rumble has a home in 2018, as the city of brotherly love is set to host the beginning of the “Road to Wrestlemania” next year, as confirmed by WWE via their twitter page.

The Wells Fargo center in Philadelphia will play host to one of the most prestigious events on the WWE’s annual schedule, when it comes to town next year on January 28th, 2018.

That won’t be all the fun Philly has that weekend however. RAW, Smackdown Live, and NXT will also hold shows there in what will be four consecutive days of WWE action. The NXT show is expected to be a Takeover show, much like Takeover: San Antonio, which airs live on the WWE Network this Saturday, a day before this year’s Royal Rumble event.

This follows Summerslam in August last year, which also had the same planning behind it, with four consecutive events being held in the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

It should be a fun four days in the Philadelphia area, that will culminate in the 30th annual Royal Rumble event, with the first being held in 1988 in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.

The news comes off the back of this weekend, where the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas will be the hosts for this year’s event, in what is expected to be a crowd of over 40,000 rabid WWE fans. The city of Philadelphia will know they can’t fit that many people into the Well’s Fargo Arena, but they will certainly be happy to host the event according to’s official announcement.

“We are very happy to continue Philadelphia’s amazing relationship with WWE by bringing Royal Rumble back to our city.We look to forward to working closely with WWE to build a great fan experience for all those attending from around the world

-Larry Needle, Executive Director of PHL Sports, a division of the Philadelphia Convention & Visitors Bureau”

This year’s Royal Rumble is this Sunday, January 29th, and can be seen live on the WWE Network at 6 pm EST/ 4 pm PST.
