Brazil international Philippe Coutinho signs a new Liverpool contract

Liverpool, England, United Kingdom – Brazil international Philippe Coutinho has committed his future to Liverpool by signing the biggest contract in the club’s history, the club announced.

The 24-year-old, who has blossomed into the key figure in Jurgen Klopp’s team, will stay with the club until 2022.

Coutinho joined Liverpool from Inter Milan in January 2013 for 9.99 million euros, scoring 34 goals in 163 appearances.

“Ever since my arrival here, I was welcomed with open arms by the supporters and everyone at this football club,” Coutinho said in comments published on the Liverpool website.

“This is an important factor that carries weight when you decide to remain here for a longer period and this did have a lot of weight when I thought about the renewal of my contract.

“I can only thank every supporter for their faith in me. I really hope to repay them. I will do my very best on the pitch to create assists for my teammates and score goals for us to try and win trophies and titles.”

Barcelona were persistently linked with him at the beginning of the campaign, while Brazil legend Ronaldo stated his wish for Real Madrid to sign Coutinho but, notably, there is no release clause in this new contract.

Manager Klopp said of Coutinho: ‘I think everyone knows what a great footballer Phil is, that is not in question — but not everyone sees what an incredibly positive character he is and what a big influence he is on the dressing room.

The contract extension is being said to be a strategy by Liverpool designed to avoid the sort of scenario they faced in 2014 when Luis Suarez signed a new deal at Liverpool in December 2013 that was ultimately only security for when he made a 88.3 million euros move to Barcelona that summer.
