White Sox Pitching Prospect Michael Kopech Called Up To Triple-A

Chicago White Sox top pitching prospect Michael Kopech has been promoted to Triple-A Charlotte. Kopech takes the place of another top pitching prospect, Lucas Giolito. Check out the article here:

Kopech is the number 12 ranked overall prospect on MLBPipeline, and the number 1 ranked right-handed pitching prospect. He is also listed as the White Sox 3rd best prospect according to MLBPipeline.

Michael Kopech throws some serious heat, his fastball constantly hits 100 MPH and can reach speeds of 102. He also has a very strong slider that gets its fair share of swings and misses. His changeup is also developing into an important plus pitch.

Over his last 6 games, Kopech has a record of 4-1 with 54 strikeouts. Kopech’s dominance has grown since he played in the All-Star Futures game, in which he struck out fellow White Sox Yoan Moncada. He has worked hard in Double-A and now gets to move up to Triple A.

His final numbers pitching with Double-A Birmingham are 7-8 with a 2.78 ERA and 155 strikeouts. Michael Kopech obviously racks up lots of strikeouts each game, but the concern lies with his walk numbers. He had lots of trouble with walks over his minor league career. However, since that All-Star Futures game, he has not pitched a game that has resulted in more than 2 walks.

Kopech will continue to improve in Triple A this season. If Kopech can continue going deep into games with a high strikeout rate and low walk rate, then the wins will come. It is not likely he will be joining the Southside this season, however, Kopech is not on the 40 man roster so a 2018 call up seems more likely.

Michael Kopech will obviously be looking to play a role in the starting rotation post rebuild. Some project him to be the future ace, but only time will tell.
