White Sox Sign Welington Castillo To A 2 Year $15 Million Dollar Deal

The stove is finally heating up and of all the teams to start it, it was the White Sox. The White Sox sign Welington Castillo to a 2 year deal worth $15 million. The deal also contains an $8 million dollar club option for a third year.

Last Season

Welington Castillo spent last season with the Baltimore Orioles. Through 96 games last season he hit .282 AVG/.323 OBP/.490 SLG with 20 home runs and 53 RBIs. He also had an OPS+ of 115 last season, which is 20 points higher than last season.

It also worth noting Castillo’s resurgence in framing numbers last season. According to Baseball Prospectus Castillo ranked 10th in major league baseball in FRAA (Fielding Runs Above Average) with 7.4 last season.

What This Means For Chicago

The 30-year-old catcher enters the south side of Chicago joining a catching platoon that contains Omar Narvaez and Kevan Smith. Both Narvez and Smith are younger players looking to make a mark on the franchise.

Castillo provides an excellent veteran pressance for the White Sox rebuilding team. He can mentor guys like Narvaez and Smith, and with top prospect Zack Collins looming in Double-A this move makes a lot of sense.

His contract is also great for the White Sox rebuild. He is signed through 2019 with a club option in 2020. This allows him to be with the club for the cusp of the projected end of the rebuild phase, or if players develop quicker than expected, Castillo could be around as a veteran presence for a contending team.
