Rick Porcello off to a bad start

The 2016 Cy-young award winner, Rick Porcello’s 2017 campaign is off to a rough start. It seems he doesn’t quite have the stuff he had last year. To put it into context, he’s not even in the top 50 in ERA, in the wins column he is not in the top 50. He ranks 83rd in the league, which is surprising because in 2016 he led the league in wins with 22. His current numbers this year don’t tell you that he was a Cy Young award winner. Maybe an All-Star break is all he needs, I can’t see him pitching like this for the rest of the season. I would like to say he will have a major rebound second half.

Rick Porcello

The stats this year for Porcello are quite uncommon to see from a Cy Young award winner. His stats in 2016 were- 3.15 ERA, 22 W, 1.01 WHIP, .20 BAA in 223 IP. Those numbers indicate a Cy Young winner. Although his numbers so far through 16 starts- 5.00 ERA, 4 W, 1.53 WHIP, .315 BAA that is a huge jump for someone who just won Cy Young. There may be a soreness that has not been noticed yet. Or maybe an injury on his throwing hand, it’s not the craziest thought, there have been many players that have been affected by the same thing.

If it continues into his start tonight against the Twins, and a couple more after. It may be a good idea to either send him down or give him some days off. Baseball being the mental game that it is, it’s hard to rebound from a bad start like Porcello is having. Although if he were too just not to get in his head. It would be nice to see him get back into the groove he had last season. One can hope for a turnaround, but for now, we just have to let time tell.
