Jose Altuve For MVP

There aren’t too many players that can say they are hitting .433 away from home; only one in fact.

The Houston Astros all-Star Silver Slugger and former Golden Glove second baseman Jose Altuve holds the highest away batting average since 1947. But that’s just the beginning.

Over the course of his career-high 16 game hitting streak, Altuve is hitting .528, 38 hits, with an OBP of .570. He has reached base in 26 consecutive games.

Monday night at Citizens Bank Park, Altuve went 4-4 with a walk. Two singles, two doubles with three RBIs and three runs scored.

“Sometimes you get surprised when you get four-hit games, but I’m just trying to stay with my approach and try to get on base for the guys hitting behind me,” Altuve told Brian McTaggart of “I think this is a really good team that deserves you to go out there and play 100 percent everyday, and I think that’s what I’m trying to do. I’m not trying to just waste my at-bats. This is a team that encourages each other to go out there and do what we’re doing. I thank God that everything is going good for us.”

Just how important is Altuve’s bat recently?

Though these are the kind of numbers Altuve puts up, it’s a good thing he’s doing it at this exact moment of the season. Ace Dallas Keuchel is on the DL so the rotation will need more help than before. Fellow all-star and double-play partner Carlos Correa is also down on the DL. It is as if Altuve is hitting for both of them.

In this vulnerable spot the Astros are in right now, it is crucial that the team continues to win games. Winning games despite having your ace and one of your all-stars shows a lot about a team. Houston is 6-4 in their last 10 so it is safe to say this team can hold their own; something necessary with the pressures October brings.
