All season long the Cubs have struggled during the first inning and nothing changed today. John Lackey had former-Cub Dexter Fowler in a 3-2 count and Fowler took his pitch to right field for a leadoff home run. According too Sporting News’ Ryan Spaeder it was only the second time a player has hit a leadoff home runs for both the Cubs against the Cardinals and vice versa. The first was Hall of Famer Lou Brock. Cardinals. Cardinals lead 1-0.

Sierra Magneuris, the following inning drives in Aldemy Diaz on a groundball single to Ian Happ in centerfield extending their lead to two run.

Third inning, Kris Bryant steps up with his 12th home run of the year. Cards now lead 2-1.

Sixth innig, Jason Heyward after hitting rockets for outs got into the box score with a double to right, scoring Rizzo and moving Zobrist to third. Cubs tie things up at two apiece.

Eighth inning, Jason Heyward steps to the plate with Rizzo on base. He hit a deep sac-fly to Fowler in center to regain the lead.

Wade Davis pitched a clean ninth, striking out 1, earning him his 11th save of the year.

John Lackey despite getting the no decision had himself a day. After back-to-back outings allowing 5 runs, he only gave up 2 on 4 hits. He also added struck out 6.

Cub look to turn this ‘W’ into a hot streak and get the Cubs engine rolling back into first place. Game 2 against the Cardinals begins at 1:20 p.m. centreal time. The Cardinal have Mike Leake starting Saturday afternoon while the Cubs have Jon Lester.

Mike Leake is coming of his worst start of the year, he gave up 4 runs on 6 hits over seven innings to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Prior to that, he had nine straight quality starts. He strung together 61 1/3 innings going 4-2 and a 1.91 earned run average.

Jon Lester is also coming off a bad start against the Dodgers. He had his shortest outting of the year which saw him pitch 3 1/3 innings, giving up 6 runs on 7 hits.
