Marlins Bit By Injury Bug

The Fish On The DL

The Miami Marlins currently have 8 of their players on the disabled list. Three of their starting infielders are on the 10-day DL and utility-man Miguel Rojas is on the 60-day DL. The other 4 injured players consist of 3 starting pitchers and 1 bullpen arm. Despite all of those injuries, the team has been playing very well as of late, but their most recent injury can be the nail in the coffin if Justin Bour cannot make a speedy recovery. The team’s recent success can be attributed to their dominant bullpen and ability to score runs in a hurry.

Position Players

Starting third baseman Martin Prado has been hurt all year for the fish with a hamstring strain. That is already a substantial loss, as he led the team last year in batting average and hits. The Marlins defensive wizard at shortstop, Adeiny Hechevarria has only played 20 out of 57 games this season as he has a strained left oblique. Although the Cuban-born shortstop is a below average hitter, he enjoys flashing the leather and making outstanding plays.

Miguel Rojas is the team’s utility man that can fill a void in the infield whenever someone goes down. During the 24 games Rojas has played this season, he hit for a .338 average and .389 OBP. It’s a small sample size, but he played very well before going to the DL with a fractured thumb. The biggest injury the Marlins have suffered this season occurred June 3rd when Justin Bour went down with an ankle injury after rounding first base on a double. He is having a career year, with 16 home runs, a .295 average and the tenth best slugging percentage in the majors at .589.

Wei-Yin Chen was named the Marlins opening day starter this season and he is the highest paid pitcher on the team. After a below average start to the season, (4.33 ERA and 1.19 WHIP) Chen made his way to the DL after 5 starts with arm fatigue. Tom Koehler followed up his mediocre 2016 campaign with a terrible start to 2017. After 8 starts, he has a 7.04 ERA and opponents are hitting .294 against him.

TK was optioned to Triple-A after his last start on May 16, 2 days later he was placed on the DL with shoulder bursitis. Justin Nicolino is the third Marlins starter out due to injury, as he has an index finger contusion. The young lefty has not lived up to expectations, as he was a top 5 prospect for the Marlins in 2013 and 2014.  Reliever Junichi Tazawa has not worked out as planned either. He has pitched 15 innings this season with a 6.60 ERA. Tazawa made his way to the DL with a rib injury in May.
