Conteras to DL

Cubs Willson Contreras is headed to the 10-day DL with a right hamstring strain while Victor Catarini was called up from Triple-A Iowa.

Contreras got injured during the 8th inning of a 3-1 loss to the San Francisco. He injured his right hamstring while running to first base during the eighth inning. Alex Avila came into the game to place the injured Contreras. Avila is batting .269 with 13 home runs and 36 runs batted in this season between the Detroit Tigers and Chicago Cubs.

Contreras was the offense for the Chicago Cubs over the last six weeks. The MLB took noticed and became the first Cub to earn a weekly award since 2014. Willson Contreras batted .455 with six runs, double, 5 home runs, and 13 RBI in six games to begin August.

Since the All-Star Break, Contreras has a slash line of .311/.380/.700 with 16 runs, 5 doubles, 10 home runs, and 29 runs batted in. Before heading to the DL, Contreras was leading the team in RBI and second in home runs.

Contreras is batting .274 (93-for-339) with 20 doubles, 21 home runs, and 70 RBI in 102 games for the Cubs this season.

Caratini Gets the Call-Up

In absence of Contreras, Cubs call-up Victor Caratini for the second time this season. Caratini appeared in 11 games between June 28th through July 30th. He batted .192 with 3 runs, 2 doubles, a home run, 2 runs batted in and 4 strikeouts in twenty-six at-bats. He will split time with newly-acquired catcher Alex Avila.

Time to Step-Up

On paper, the Chicago Cubs roster from the leadoff man to whoever Joe Maddon bats ninth should be the best in all of major league baseball.  This season, it has not been what the Cubs and their fans had hope for. Here are some stats to note:

  • Kris Bryant- Batting .235 with runners in scoring position this season. On a positive note, Bryant is batting .372 with 6 runs, 2 doubles, a triple, and 6 RBIs in August.
  • Although Kyle Schwarber has had a better half, he is still batting under .200 and .153 with runner on this season. His 19 home runs are fourth most on the Cubs.
  • Javier Baez- Batting .297 with 6 runs, a triple, 3 home runs, and 9 RBIs across his 10 August games.

Hopefully, Willson Contreras has a speedy recovery and comes prepared for the Chicago Cubs Playoff push.
