Cubs Bring In Peter Bourjos on a Minor League Deal

The very slow moving Hot Stove continues to keep fans waiting and wondering if their team will land key free agents. Most of the big names are still on the table but some of less talked about names have found themselves a home. Speedy outfielder Peter Bourjos signed with the Chicago Cubs on a minor league deal, pending a physical.

The Park Ridge, Illinois native spent Spring Training with the Chicago White Sox before being traded to the Tampa Bay Rays. Bourjos had one short DL stint during the season but it did not keep him out long. He managed to squeeze out 203 plate appearance over 100 games played.

Across the 100 games, Bourjos hit .233/.272/.655 with 27 runs, 9 doubles, 3 triples, 5 home runs, and 15 runs batted in. He played all three outfield position while spending the most time in center and left. Bourjos played just about a perfect 476 innings because he finished the season with a 100 percent field percentage.

Nothing is promised for Bourjos since the Cubs already have a full outfield. A strong spring might get him on the major league ball club this season in a restricted role. This will likely cause continued problems for Joe Maddon like we saw last season with the constant lineup changes. Assuming Happ, Heyward, and Schwarber get the everyday job this will continue the Albert Almora problem. Last season, Almora performed really well, but due to the packed outfield, he did not get the playing time he deserved.

Bourjos is a low-risk signing for the Chicago ball club. He will be competing for a 25-man roster spot starting on Friday, February 23.

We’re Waiting?

Spring training is inching closer. Although that is true, it does not change the fact there are several players not signed. Theo Epstein and the Cubs front office have made note of that and continue to stay in touch with them. The Cubs are still looking to add a starting pitcher whether it is Yu Darvish, Jake Arrieta, or someone else that is available. Make sure your following close as this grows smaller and teams make the Hot Stove “hot” again.
