N.L. Central Overview

N.L. Central

The N.L. Central so far this year has been a whirl wind of oddities with teams in certain places that most people didn’t see coming. To start it off the reigning World Series Champions. Chicago Cubs are 1.5 back to the first place Brewers. Yep, your read that right. The Brewers are leading the division and the Cubs are not, just goes to show how unpredictable the MLB can really be at times. Although there still are 74 games left in the regular season. Things should get more interesting before it gets boring.

The Brewers have lead the division for most of the year, and in the first half many saw them as a threat. Before the all star break. The Brewers were 52-41, but seem to have hit a bump in the road and have dropped their first 5 games back. Just before the ASB the Brewers had a 5.5 game lead over the Cubs. Now they are just a measly 1.5 games ahead in only 7 games back. So, what could it be that is making it hard for them to win games? Could it be that Pittsburgh is on the rise and trying for a unforeseen playoff run? Or could it be that the Brewers simply ran out of gas? Whatever it may be the Cubs are hot on their trail, and don’t seem to be slowing down any time soon.

The Cubs have had a odd start to the season, going 43-45 right before the ASB. Things were looing grim for the Cubs, especially on the last game before the ASB. When Jon Lester gave up 10 runs in the first inning, almost all hope seemed to be loss. Then they came screaming out the gate winning six straight, before loosing to the Cardinals on Friday with a score of 11-4. It’s hard for a team to win a lot of games especially when they played later than most teams. Not to mention all the publicity they had to go through in the offseason. However they are a among the top three youngest teams in the league. To think they are handling things the way they are, and to not be 10 games under .500. Is a good start to the season in my eyes lets just hope they can keep it and get back to another Fall Classic.

The Pirates used to be a forced to be reckoned with, now they just seem like one of those teams that are just there. They have sat around .500 for most of the season, and at third place in the division for the majority of the season. However the Pirates have won 8 of their last 10 games, and just like the Cubs seem to be on a roll and don’t see them slowing down any time soon. With the eighth best team ERA in the league their pitching has been their strong point all season. Their offence however is ranked 22nd in the N.L. in team average with a .245. Normally that is not going to win you a lot of games.

As a Cubs fan it’s always interesting to have a take on the St. Louis Cardinals. Again like the Cubs and the Pirates the Cardinals have been floating around .500 for most of the season, and haven’t been able to get out of that three spot for a good while now. Winning 6 of their last 10 games, nothing has seemed to change with the Cardinals now only two games under .500 and 4.0 games back of the Brewers. Their offence hasn’t been any better than the Brewers, Cubs or Pirates. Although their pitching ranks fifth in the league in team ERA with a 3.86. If they have any hope of pulling a play off appearance out of their hat. The offence is going to have to wake up and start hitting the ball.

The Reds are the only team that seems to be completely out of the N.L. Central race already at 10.5 games back and dead last in the division. The Reds have to pull a miracle out of their hat if they have any chance of a playoff run. Ranking dead last in the league in team ERA with a 5.31 could be a major reason as to why they are struggling so much. Their offense on the other hand is a lot better by comparison, ranking 10th in the league in team average. The Reds have a .258 but it’s not enough if their rotation keep giving up 5 runs a game. So, for all you Reds fans, pray they can pull something out and make a run. Or it will be a long miserable season for the Cincinnati Reds.
