Wilson Contreras Nearing Return To The Lineup

Out since August 9th with a right hamstring injury, Wilson Contreras is making a lot of progress to returning to the Chicago Cubs. Having Contreras out of the lineup was a huge blow, especially since the Cubs were thin at Catcher. Sending Miguel Montero to Toronto, forced the Cubs to bring up Victor Caratini. Then not too long after Contreras goes down with a hamstring injury. Making the Cubs pick up veteran Catcher, Alex Avila from the Tigers. Having Avila has proven very beneficial to the Cubs. Although he doesn’t quite bring the same energy as Contreras does, and of course the hot bat.

Contreras getting hurt couldn’t have come at a worse time. The Cubs were struggling, and he was providing most of the offensive output. Right before he got injured Wilson was batting .274/.488/.845 with 21 home runs and 70 RBIs. Ever since the all star break, Wilson has hit 10 home runs, drove in 41 and is hitting .261. No one besides Giancarlo Stanton was as hot as Contreras was.

We still aren’t sure on when his return will be. I’m expecting him to return in time for the playoffs. Hoping he hasn’t lost the edge that he had before he had gotten injured. Having Wilson Contreras back will be a huge benefit for the Cubs come October. It will be good for Lester, seeing that he has worked and is comfortable with Contreras behind the plate. Also for Arrieta because of his high velocity breaking balls results in a lot of balls in the dirt. Contreras is excellent at picking balls in the dirt and preventing passed balls. Contreras will also bring a lot of energy and emotion back to the dugout. Hopefully bringing some life to this near death Cubs offense.
