Cincinnati Reds Sign Two Outfielders To Minor League Deals

To start the off-season, the Cincinnati Reds sign two outfielders, Mason Williams and Rosell Herrera, to minor league deals. The Reds currently have 5 outfielders on the major league roster so this pair of signings make things interesting.

Rosell Herrera comes from the Colorado Rockies organization. He is a center fielder that played 103 games with Triple-A Albuquerque last season. His batting line last season was .278 AVG/.351 OBP/.394 SLG with 3 homers and 27 RBIs. Herrera also swiped 20 bases in 2017. The 3 homers and only 27 RBIs is a bit concerning given he played in 103 games. Herrera will likely need more time in the minors to improve at the plate.

Mason Williams is also a center fielder, but he is from the Yankees farm system. He played 5 games with the Yankees last year, going 4 for 16, but spent most of the year with Triple-A Scranton. With Triple-A Scranton he posted a batting line of .269 AVG/.309 OBP/.318 SLG with 2 home runs and 30 RBIs. Like Herrera, Williams has a good amount of speed, as Williams stole 19 bases last year. Williams will also probably need more time in the minors to develop as a hitter.

What Does This Mean?

Considering the number of trade talks about current Center fielder Billy Hamilton, this could mean they are prepared to move him. Both Herrera and Williams seem close to being ready for major league action so these signings open up the possibility of trading Hamilton.

Although Hamilton only hit .247 last season, most teams out there would love to have his speed. He can absolutely burn down the baseline. Last season he swiped 59 bags, and he can make some incredible catches in the outfield. If the Reds do decide to trade him, they will likely be looking for some solid prospects in return.
