3 Important Trade Pieces The Pirates Still Have

After a rather disappointing return for Gerrit Cole, the Pirates have set the record straight on where they would like to go moving forward. Pittsburg will be looking for Triple-A players that are close to making it to the majors, or young talent just getting started in the majors. Even after trading Andrew McCutchen, the Pirates still have some solid trade options that could allow them to restock their farm system. So, here are 3 important trade pieces the pirates still have.

Ivan Nova

After having a stellar 2016 season, 31-year-old pitcher Ivan Nova had a less than impressive 2017 season. Having a spike in his ERA as well as an increase in walks and home runs. However, Nova is still a solid veteran pitcher and knows how to bounce back from those kind of seasons.

Last season Nova had a career high in innings and had the second most strikeouts in his career. Nova should be an interesting piece to deal near the trade deadline if he starts off the season well. Many teams will be looking for a good 3 or 4 option for there starting rotations around the deadline.

Starling Marte

The 29-year-old outfielder could catch a decent return, but in order to maximize the return, the Pirates should try to trade him around the deadline. Marte has had his fair share of troubles in recent years. He was suspended 80 games for violating the leagues PED policy. This caused Marte to miss most of last season.

Marte is still a speedy outfielder that can flash the leather and give opposing teams trouble on the basepaths. He is a good contact hitter and should be a good addition to the top of a potential playoff teams roster. Last season he played in 77 games producing a .275 AVG with 7 homers and 21 stolen bases. Not many rumors have been circulating as to which teams are interested in Marte, but that should become more clear as the season progresses.

Josh Harrison

Josh Harrison is coming off of a pretty solid season. In 2017 he finished with a .272 batting average with a career-high 16 home runs and 47 RBIs. He was also selected to be in the all-star game in 2017. If Harrison can keep his production up he can be a solid option for many teams looking for a top of the order hitter.

Harrison plays well at second base and has solid numbers at the plate. If the Pirates hold on to Harrison until around the deadline they are likely to get a higher return. One team that comes to mind that needs a second baseman is the Arizona Diamondbacks. Arizona has some solid prospects that the Pirates could look to acquire should they want to make another push for the playoffs this season.

So those are 3 important trade pieces the Pirates still have. Between Harrison, Marte, and Nova they should be able to get some solid returns. So far they have traded Cole and McCutchen, who will be the next to go?
