The Monster Energy Series rolls into Bristol Motor Speedway for the Bass Pro Shops NRA Night Race on Saturday, August 19th at 7:30 pm.

And the magic number that drivers and fans will need to pay attention to is 3.

With just three races left until the playoffs (Bristol, Darlington and Richmond), the spotlight is shining brightly on three drivers who hold the remaining post-season spots – Chase Elliott, Matt Kenseth and Jamie McMurray.

There are three drivers with previous wins at The Last Great Colosseum who have yet to secure a playoff berth:

Matt Kenseth (who has the best driver rating) and Dale Earnhardt Jr (22nd in the points standings) also Joey Logano (who has 2 wins and 4 top 5’s)

Keeping with the format of “three is the magic number”, here are some other three timers and what they did:

Three is the magic number for a few drivers that have a win at Bristol or need to win to secure the last 3 spots

Here are some facts you may or may not know about Bristol Motor Speedway:

  • The first Monster Energy NASCAR Cup race was July 30, 1961; Jack Smith won the event (with relief from Johnny Allen).
  • In the fall of 1978, the first night race took place at BMS
  • Hall Of Famer Richard Petty leads the series in starts with 60
  • Matt Kenseth leads active Monster Energy drivers with 36 starts, but Dale Earnhardt Jr has 35.
  • Denny Hamlin and Ryan Newman lead all active drivers in Coors Light poles at BMS with three each.

But what about the new overtime rule change? There hasn’t been an overtime finish at Bristol since 2015, when Matt Kenseth ran 11 OT laps more than the scheduled 500 lap finish.

Darrell Waltrip, who is from Franklin, TN, is the only Tennessee native to win a Monster Energy Cup series championship.

Bristol Motor Speedway qualifying will take place this Friday night at 5:45pm and then the teams will race under the lights on Saturday at 7:30pm. Tune into NBC to catch all of the racing action!
