On Sunday, Chase Elliott seemingly had a career day at Chicagoland Speedway. He won Stage 2, led 42 laps, and finished runner up to Martin Truex Jr. A team member modified his spoiler prior to the race. NASCAR announced an L1 penalty for the Hendrick 24 team on Tuesday.

Chase Elliott will head to Loudon this weekend without his crew chief or car chief. Kenny Francis will be the interim crew chief this weekend. Alan Gustafson and Joshua Kirk are suspended for 1 race each. Gustafson was also fined $25,000. The team also loses 15 driver and owner points. This drops Chase Elliott from 6th to 8th in the Playoff standings. His second-place finish is also encumbered. If Chase Elliott advances to Round 2, the bonus points from Chicagoland will not follow him. Lastly, Hendrick Motorsports stated they will not appeal the penalty.

While Chase Elliott was interviewed on NBCSN before the race, it is clearly visible that a team member is messing with the car’s spoiler. A piece of tape was allegedly placed on the spoiler, increasing downforce. This tape was visible near the car’s right rear corner throughout the race.

In addition, 2 other teams received minor penalties on Tuesday. The 20 Joe Gibbs Racing Cup team and the 98 Biagi-DenBeste Racing Xfinity team both had safety violations. Unsecured lug nuts post-race will cost crew chiefs Jason Ratcliff and Johnathan Hanson $10,000 and $5,000, respectively.

Both the Monster Energy Cup and Xfinity Series will be back in action this weekend. The Xfinity Series heads to Kentucky Speedway for their Playoff opening race. It will air on NBCSN Saturday at 8 PM EST. In addition, the Cup Series’ Playoff Race 2 is from New Hampshire Motor Speedway. NBCSN will carry it on Sunday at 2 PM EST.
