On Sunday, 1 driver will enter the Ford Ecoboost 400 trying to win their first Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series championship, Martin Truex Jr. While he may not have the race wins or Homestead stats of his title competitors, Truex is still the championship favorite.

Truex’s Record Year

By all measures, Martin Truex Jr has had a historic season in 2017. He has a series leading 7 wins, 18 top 5s, and 2175 laps led in 35 starts. Martin has been the mile-and-a-half master in 2017. He has 6 wins on 1.5 mile tracks in 2017, a single-season record. It appears to be Truex’s championship to lose. In a test at Homestead-Miami Speedway last month, the 78 team was very pleased with a lot of speed.

But, do not think that Truex winning Sunday is a guarantee. Just 2 weeks ago at Texas, Kevin Harvick was able to beat Truex on a mile-and-a-half track. All 4 drivers do have a legitimate shot at holding the big trophy on Sunday night. If Truex wins the title, he will have beaten 3 of the best racers to stand tall as champion. Kevin Harvick, Kyle Busch, and Brad Keselowski will be very tough competition for Truex.

Mile-and-a-half tracks may have been Truex’s playground in 2017, with an average finish of 2.7. but Homestead-Miami Speedway is a unique track. An aged asphalt surface in South Florida will be the 41st competitor Sunday, as NASCAR only visits Homestead once a year. Truex’s average finish at Homestead is 12.3. With all this in mind, Las Vegas gives Truex 7-4 odds at being champion.

Don’t miss the championship-deciding race for the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series, in addition to the final rides for Dale Earnhardt Jr and Matt Kenseth. The Ford Ecoboost 400 will be live from Homestead-Miami Speedway on Sunday, November 19. Coverage will start at 1 PM EST on NBC, MRN, and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio Channel 90. 4 drivers enter, 1 will leave Florida as champion. Be sure to catch every lap of the unpredictable championship fight.
