On Monday morning, Stewart Haas Racing unveiled Danica Patrick’s Darlington throwback paint scheme for this year’s Southern 500. It honors Dale Jarrett’s Robert Yates Racing Ford Credit Taurus from 1996. This scheme was driven to victory lane in the Daytona 500, Coca Cola 600, and the Brickyard 400 in one season. It was in this scheme where Jarrett and Robert Yates started the tradition of kissing the bricks at Indianapolis. Danica Patrick and the 10 team hope to continue their streak of consistency in this famed scheme.

For the past 3 years, the Southern 500 has come with added significance. The Darlington Labor Day classic has been the official throwback weekend of NASCAR. Drivers and teams honor their predecessors by running tribute paint schemes that throw it back to years gone by. NBC has also had Ken Squier, Ned Jarrett, and Dale Jarrett as television announcers for this race.

Recent winners of the Throwback Southern 500 include Carl Edwards and Martin Truex Jr. Darlington Raceway is one of the oldest and toughest tracks on the circuit. “The Track Too Tough to Tame” and “The Lady in Black” are nicknames for the South Carolina track. At 1.366 miles in length and with an egg-shaped, this track truly is unique.

Darlington Raceway is a track that defines racing careers, where the best drivers of all time have honed their craft and displayed success. Active winners at Darlington include Jimmie Johnson, Kyle Busch, Denny Hamlin, Matt Kenseth, Kevin Harvick, and Martin Truex Jr. The 2017 Southern 500 is on Sunday, September 3rd. It will air on NBCSN, MRN, and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio.
