Great Clips Ends Sponsorship with Kasey Kahne

Great Clips has announced an end to their sponsoring of Kasey Kahne’s number 5 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet team after 2017. The barber shop chain brand has been an associate sponsor for the 5 team since 2013.

Great Clips did not cite on track performance woes as a reason for their leave. They did however acknowledge a “shift in our marketing strategies,” said President Steve Hockett. Their contractual agreement had them listed as sponsoring Kahne through 2018, so the deal will end a year early.

Kahne is currently 20th in the Cup Series standings, 60 points outside of a Playoff position. He has failed to make the Playoffs for the last 2 seasons, with his last win coming at Atlanta in 2014.

Since joining Hendrick Motorsports in 2012, Kahne has amassed 5 wins and a 4th place championship finish. Recently though, it has been a struggle for the 5 team. Kahne currently is sitting on a 95 race winless streak.

Kahne did win at Bristol in 2013 with Great Clips as a primary sponsor, this was one of his 2 wins that season. Hendrick Motorsports’ contract with Kahne had aligned with Great Clips sponsorship, lasting through 2018. This new development leaves the 5 car currently lacking primary sponsorship for 12 races in 2018. Kahne’s current additional sponsors include Mountain Dew, Quicken Loans, and Liftmaster.

By all accounts, Kasey Kahne is in the midst of a prolonged dry spell. His performance during the latter half of 2016 was improved, with 7 top 10 finishes in the last 12 races of the year. This resulted in optimism for the 5 car coming into 2017, which has yet to result in any significant improvement. Through 12 races this year, Kahne has only 3 top 10s. An uptick in performance is necessary if Kahne wants to attract replacement sponsors and win again at NASCAR’s highest level.
