Harry Scott Jr Passes Away

Former NASCAR Cup Series team owner Harry Scott Jr died at the age of 51 on Wednesday. Scott is remembered for co-owning Turner Scott Motorsports, Phoenix Racing, and HScott Motorsports.

His family commented on his passing, stating that “We are shocked and saddened to confirm that Harry Scott, Jr., age 51, passed away yesterday, August 2, 2017. Harry will be remembered as a loving family man and successful business owner. We ask that everyone please keep Harry’s smile, generosity, and essential kindness in your thoughts and prayers.”

Scott entered NASCAR as a sponsor for Xfinity series team Braun Racing in 2009. In 2013, Scott partnered with Steve Turner, forming Turner Scott Motorsports (TSM). TSM competed for several seasons in ARCA, the K&N East Series, Trucks, and the Xfinity Series.

TSM won back to back championships in the K&N Pro Series East, with drivers Dylan Kwasniewski and Ben Rhodes. The partners also fielded teams in the Truck series for Ron Hornaday, James Buescher (2012 champion), Brandon Jones, and others. Justin Allgaier drove for TSM in Xfinity for the 2013 season. TSM made their Cup Series debut at Daytona for the 2012 Coke Zero 400, fielding a car for Bill Elliott. This ended up being the hall of famer’s final career start.

TSM split after the 2014 season due to financial issues. In a partnership with Chip Ganassi, HScott Motorsports formed. HScott bought out Phoenix Racing from James Finch. They fielded cars in K&N east and the Cup Series. Clint Bowyer raced for HScott last year before moving to Stewart Haas Racing. Justin Allgaier and Michael Annett also raced in Cup for HScott. After Bowyer’s departure, the team shut down prior to 2017.

Several drivers sent out condolence messages in the wake of Harry Scott Jr’s death. Justin Allgaier posted a photo of himself, his wife Ashley, and Scott that included a heartfelt message. NASCAR also released a statement that mentioned Scott’s lifelong passion for racing and intense dedication to the sport.
