Kasey Kahne to Leavine Family Racing 95 Car

Announced Tuesday afternoon, Kasey Kahne will pilot the Leavine Family Racing 95 car in 2018. He will be replacing Michael McDowell. “I am ready for this challenge and look forward to making a fresh start,” said Kahne. His new team will have a technical alliance with Richard Childress Racing.

Kahne’s 2017 Season

2017 has been a roller coaster year for Kasey Kahne and the Hendrick 5 team. Other than his surprise win at the Brickyard 400, there have been few bright spots. He has had 3 top 5s, 4 top 10s, and 31 laps led in 27 starts. Earlier this week, it was announced that Kasey will have Darian Grubb as crew chief for the last 9 races of 2017. He is currently 15th in the Playoffs.

LFR Background

Leavine Family Racing and the 95 car has been the home for Michael McDowell since 2016. While Kasey’s future is now certain, McDowell’s is not. McDowell has been running at the finish of all but 1 race so far this season. He has run more laps than anyone else in the 2017 Cup Series season. The 95 team has 13 top 20 finishes in 2017. McDowell has a 2017 average finish of 21.6 in the 95 car.

This will be the 4th different team Kasey Kahne has driven for. Kasey has been behind the wheel of the Hendrick Motorsports 5 car since 2012, winning 6 times. In 2012 he finished a career-best 4th in points. Kasey’s main focus is still on finishing 2017 on a high note. He said, “I just want to finish strong and do everything possible to finish with the best results in the 5 car I possibly can.”

Silly Season Review

Perhaps NASCAR silly season’s biggest question mark has been answered. However, top name drivers such as Matt Kenseth, Danica Patrick, and Kurt Busch still remain unsure about 2018. Expect more silly season news to break in the coming weeks.
