Fighting For A Chance: Logano Needs Watkins Glen Win

Watkins Glen murphman61 via

Watkins Glen could be the place where Logano clinches his playoff berth. He won there in 2015 and finished 2nd last season.

With a mere 5 races left until the 2017 playoffs begin at Chicagoland, Joey Logano sits 69 points below the cutoff line and faces a near must-win scenario heading into this week’s race at Watkins Glen.

In only one of the last six starts at the NY track, Logano finished no lower than 7th. He has made the championship 4 in 2 of the 3 years it’s been implemented.

When he didn’t make the final 4 in 2015, he finished the series with 6 wins.

Logano’s stats at this track are nothing to sneeze at. He has one win, three top 5’s and five top 10’s

His average finish is 12.750, which is fourth best. Here are the rest of his stats at Watkins Glen:

  • Average Running Position of 16.415, 12th-best
  • Driver Rating of 86.8, 9th-best
  • 9 Fastest Laps Run, 10th-best
  • Average Green Flag Speed of 119.958, 9th-fastest
  • 403 Laps in the Top 15 (55.8), 10th-most
  • 112 Quality Passes, 12th-most

Let’s look at the remaining tracks after this week’s I Love New York 355 at The Glen, which is Sunday, August 6th, at 3pm:

Bristol – Logano finished in the top 10 with 38 laps led in 2016, not good enough for his 2017 chances

Michigan – Only a top 10 finish with no laps led in 2016 makes it hard to even consider him being good at this track.

Darlington – He had a top 5 here last year, which normally would be a good finish, but he’ll need more for a Playoff berth.

Richmond – Another top 10 finish

Logano has got to knock it out of the park at The Glen if he has even a remote chance in staying in the limelight.

He has some stiff competition with road course ringers like AJ Allmendinger and drivers like Kyle Busch who is a serious threat, especially after his win last week at Pocono. Logano does have the second highest driver rating between 2014 and 2016.

Retired drivers Tony Stewart and Jeff Gordon have the most wins at Watkins Glen.

If you’re looking for a sleeper pick for your fantasy games, Logano is oddly listed as the best for the asking price.
