Ryan Blaney is breathing just a bit easier as he heads into this weeks cutoff race at Phoenix and gets his shot at the Homestead Finale.

Blaney beat out Denny Hamlin by 1/1000 of a second to earn the top spot and a shot at the final 4.

Hamlin and Blaney are both below the cut line. Five drivers vie for four spots at Homestead.

Sunday’s Can-Am 500, the final race in the playoffs round of 8, airs on NBC at 2:30 on Sunday.

Chase Elliott, below the cut line as well, qualified fourth just behind Kyle Larson.

Larson fell just 3/1000’s of a second short of the pole winning speed of 26.098 sec.

Blaney said it was encouraging to finish so well when it mattered the most because of a big weekend like this.

It’s been a season of firsts for Blaney.

He earned his first victory and his first playoff berth.

If he wins Sunday’s race from the top spot, it will be his first trip to the Homestead Finale.

Or he can advance with a lot of help, just like Jimmie Johnson or Chase Elliott.

Blaney trails Brad Keselowski by 22 points in the playoff standings, with the blue deuce being the only driver to miss the third round of qualifying, coming in 16th,

In Blaney’s three career starts at Phoenix, he finished 10th in March 2016, 8th last November and 23rd in the spring.
