At the age of 59, Derrike Cope is not slowing down anytime soon. While several drivers in their 40s have retired over the past few seasons, Cope still has the desire to race at the highest level. The 1990 Daytona 500 Champion’s race team, Starcom Racing, is now chartered and will run the entire 2018 MENCS season. They will field the 00 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 for multiple drivers.

Starcom Racing was established last season after Cope and Premium Motorsports ended their partnership. Starcom, a telecommunications company based in New Jersey, previously sponsored Cope at Premium Motorsports.

Due to being understaffed, the 00 team had to withdraw from their planned debut at Dover last fall. However, they made 2 starts during the 2017 Playoffs, at Kansas, and at Phoenix.

Since they have now acquired a charter for the 2018 season, the Starcom entry is now guaranteed in every race. They will run next month’s Daytona 500 with team manager Derrike Cope behind the wheel. Their crew chief will also be Tony Furr, who helped the startup team last season.

It is unsure whether Starcom bought or leased an unused charter and no word on from which team. It is possible that SCR bought the former 27 team charter from Richard Childress Racing, but that is not confirmed.

In conclusion, the charter silly season is winding down. As a result, the 2018 NASCAR season is nearly upon us. In just a few short weeks, cars will be on track in Daytona qualifying for the 60th Daytona 500. Among them will be the 00 car, with a former winner of The Great American Race.
