Subway Pulls Suarez Sponsorship Over Donuts

Subway abruptly pulled their sponsorship because of “circumstances beyond our control.” This was part of a statement on Saturday regarding rookie Daniel Suarez.

The conflict was apparently due to Suarez’s pre-race appearance at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in July. He was handing out donuts to fans, this triggered the riff with Subway.

The appearance was part of an NBC Sports segment called “Desayuno With Daniel.” Suarez was asking fans if Carl Edwards had ever given them a donut.

Suarez, 25, took over the #19 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota from Carl Edwards during the offseason. His move up to the Cup Series came a year after winning the Xfinity Series championship. So far, he has a season best finish of third at Watkins Glen. He currently sits at 20th in the points standings. In addition, Suarez is the current leader for the Rookie of the Year standings. His season to-date has been defined by quiet yet consistent results, as he has 8 top tens.

The sudden halt on the sponsorship threw Suarez and JGR for a loop. Subway was a prominent sponsor on Suarez’s car during the Auto Club 400, the Coca Cola 600 at Charlotte, and the Coke Zero 400 in July at Daytona.

However, a JGR spokesperson told that “Daniel didn’t do anything to violate any sort of moral clause.” This news shocked everyone, even team owner Joe Gibbs.

Here’s my take on this whole issue. Of course it was blown way out of proportion. Subway was just looking for an easy out.

Maybe it was because Suarez was handing out donuts to fans, instead of Subway sandwiches.

Was he projecting the wrong image to fans who would rather eat donuts than Subway?
