Truex Jr. Eyes Regular Season Championship Lock at Bristol

With just a mere 121 stage points victory coming out of Bristol, Martin Truex Jr. could lock up the regular season championship.

Martin Truex Jr. is just one race away from locking himself into the 2017 playoffs. He just needs to finish strong at Bristol Motor Speedway. Probably a sure thing given his track record.

That’s the scenario facing other drivers who are trying to beat Truex Jr. at his own game. Winning stages and earning 9 or 10 points per stage win is what Truex has done, and players like Larson could be a viable threat.

Prior to Michigan, Stage 1 has been very kind to the Mayetta, NJ native. He has earned the following in the last five races:

Watkins Glen – 9 points

Pocono – 9 points

Indianapolis – 10 points

New Hampshire – 10 points

Kentucky – 10 points

Stage 2 points were pretty much the same as Stage 1. But wait. Last week’s race at Michigan he only earned 7 points in the first stage.

In the statistics of latest streaks, Truex has three top 5’s, three top 10’s and three top 15’s. So if we take just his top 5’s, in stage 1 he would earn 6 points, for stage two it’s 12 points, and in the final stage is 32 points. That’s a total of 50 points.

Enough to get him a lock after leaving Bristol, and a comfortable cushion awaiting the playoffs at Chicagoland.

Even if Truex has an atrocious showing, blows a motor or gets a DNF, he still has a 129 point lead after Michigan. His current standings hold an almost insurmountable lead for the regular season champioship. Being the points leader after the regular season final at Richmond means 15 Playoff bonus points. As of now, Truex would have 50 points heading into Chicagoland.

Truex had an average finishing spot of 15.6 in the July race, which would get him 22 points to pad his lead of 129. Let’s hope that Kyle Larson doesn’t continue his winning streak of late. He might just catch up to Truex.

Not pass him – just catch up.

It seems like we have a dog fight between two drivers that are not named Earnhardt or Johnson. Because that would be hum drum and predictable, in my opinion.
